Whether we are living the life of our dreams, would like to see some things in our life change…or would like a whole new life altogether…it is our everyday actions that drive both the change and it’s level of sustainability in our life. Now, most of us don’t have a personal coach hollering at us to get out of bed in the morning, so what drives our ability to accomplish anything? According to Joelle K. Jay, author of The Inner Edge, personal leadership is the leadership of the self. It is the ability to define a direction for your life, and to move in that direction with consistency and clarity.

When I took her quiz, I scored a 24 out of 40, which means I get it right almost exactly HALF the time. Sure, most people could exist on that, but I want the most that life has to offer me. At the very least, I need to know that I am perfectly capable of kicking my own butt should the situation call for it. After all, we are talking about the ability to walk in the direction of the life of our dreams…or at least a circumstance better than the one we are in right now.
Now is our chance to focus on the things we SHOULD be doing, but always find “valid” reasons not to. Girl, if we want to see change in our lives, we have to be the ones to bring the change! If we want to keep doing the things we have always done, we can expect to keep getting the things we have always got. As frustrating as that is to admit, you know it's true.
When I write, I generally sit in a quiet place with my earphones on, listening to classical music (because it makes me feel smart). BUT, today, I was almost literally falling asleep on my keyboard! Now, I am going to blame this on the fact that I am on Day 4 of my #MEMakeover and these 5:00 am SHRED classes have me all flubbed up. Hey! I’m an entrepreneur, I can just pack up, head home and take a nap, EXCEPT…I made a commitment to you that I was going to get this out before our next #FNL…more importantly, I made a commitment to myself that I was going to get this done today.
**Sidebar – why are always far more likely to keep a commitment we make to someone else, then one we have made to ourselves? Let ‘s just let that sit here for a minute**
I had a choice, nap on the keyboard OR change my atmosphere, elevate the energy, focus and do the thing I said I was going to do. Soooo, I changed my Pandora to my favorite girlie flavor and BOOM! Inspiration hit in the form of Sit Still, Look Pretty by Daya and the entire flavor of this article went from hum drum to real world talk about being our personal best.
Now the guy sitting at the table across from me might think I’m flipping nuts as I go after this keyboard with a newfound fervor and rocking a seriously silent dance party (ear buds remember), but I am getting this thing done! The truth is that when we really get after our goals, we are going to have people looking at us funny. They will distract us with offers of food, fun, fellowship, even other goals. Put your blinders on and do you girl!
Just this past Monday, I kicked off my own journey to #personalleadership and I’m already getting the looks, the watchers, the stalkers, trollers and eye rollers. After several years of living life online, you’d think I’d be used to it, but it still hurts…every time. The thing is, we have to want whatever we are reaching for MORE than we care what other people think. Real life example…
Part of the commitment I made to myself this month, was to workout 2x/day. Knowing the struggle was real, I broke it down to hold myself accountable to a class in the morning and a walk at night. My next challenge…these goofy classes are scheduled for 5:15am! No problem, think of all the extra time I will have in my day. (Stepbrothers: so much room for activities!) Yeah, did I mention I have to set my alarm for 4:15am?! Might be nuts, but it is doable. I’ll just get my behind to bed earlier. So, I post my workouts on Facebook to hold myself accountable…NOT because I think I am super athlete of the world (thought that would be pretty cool too).
I know that, they know that, but the comments still happen. Do you see how many obstacles I need to “lead myself” around just to make ONE class? The key, the trick, the magic potion…is to keep moving while keeping your eye on the end game:

My legs hurt SO bad right now, but with every step I visualize a strong, lifted backside and smirk with pride. What is it you are chasing? We CAN do this…but YOU are in charge.
