Self-care, schmelf-care, blah, blah, blah…
WHY in the world is everyone always harping about the importance of self-care?! I am already too busy trying to take care of my friends, my family, my job, my bills, my car, etc. There is just not enough time in the day to make time for self-care too.
I hear ya girl, really I do, BUT self-care is not just the act of getting a mani/pedi, or taking yourself on a vacation, or spending hours ignoring the world with our face in a book. Although all of those things are top-notch examples, for some of us, they may also be as close to unrealistic as marrying a prince. I mean it COULD happen, but let’s be real here.
Let’s define self-care, shall we? Self-care is the practice of consciously doing things that preserve or improve your mental, physical health, emotional and spiritual health. It is not just about our next hair appointment, this is the stuff that actually keeps us together people!
Ever felt like you were falling apart? Think back now, how was your self-care regime…see. When our cup is empty, we have nothing left to give to the world. We start to run on fumes and our personal engines/systems start to break down. Self-care is like an oil change for the psyche, without it our ability to love, laugh, create and inspire dries up and our joy begins to shrivel.
Sounds rather depressing doesn’t it? Well it absolutely can be…quite literally. Self-care not only supports our systems and improves our physical health, it also helps PROTECT our mental health. It reduces our daily stress and anxiety. It boosts our self-esteem - when we feel better about ourselves ladies, the world knows it, trust me. It even leads to better relationships…with ourselves and others.
So, remember the next time someone speaks to you about the importance of self-care, they are really speaking life, love and joy into your world…get you some. Here are a few simpler (less-prince like) examples of how you can start caring for yourself today:
Get a good night’s sleep
Drink lots of water
Go for a brisk walk
Take a relaxing bath
Say no to something you don’t want to do
Listen to your favorite song
Watch a feel-good film
Make something healthfully delicious for dinner
Make a list of five or more things you like about yourself
Spend time with loved ones
Still don't have time for self-care? Book an appointment with your coach today, so we can help you design your day in a way that leaves space for YOU too!
Hugs,
Joey
